Sarah Burton is a road-tested singer-songwriter with a fearless sound that blends roots rock, indie pop, and raw Americana. With hundreds of shows under her belt across the U.S. and Canada, she’s built a reputation for magnetic live performances and sharply crafted songs that hit both the heart and the hips. From Toronto to Terlingua to Austin, Burton’s music reflects a restless spirit and a deep love for storytelling. Her latest album, Swoonville USA, captures that journey—bold, honest, and made to be played loud..
For singer-songwriter Sarah Burton, the old adage "home is where you hang your hat" hits close to the heart. From Toronto to Terlingua, Texas, and now Austin, she’s charted her course through song—and with her sixth full-length album, Swoonville USA, she’s landed somewhere both familiar and entirely new. “Some of the songs came before the pandemic when I was breaking myself trying to get ahead,” says Burton. “Then most came after I returned to the States. I was falling in love, and I used to say, ‘I’m just here in Swoonville USA,’ no matter where I was.” A follow-up to 2023’s 64 Magic Queens, the album—produced by Jane Aurora—is a genre-blurring, emotionally rich collection that recalls The Globe Sessions-era Sheryl Crow. Standouts include the effervescent “Might As Well Be Loved,” the windswept “Montana” and “Oklahoma,” and the striking lead single “Worth Sticking Around For.” Burton’s journey began in Toronto, where she released her 2008 EP Love Is For Pussies and 2010’s Mayflower. After Make Your Own Bed (2015), she set out for Terlingua in 2016, eventually finding a creative rhythm in Austin. “I’m a nomad at heart,” she says. “I feel connected to a lot of places.” Her writing process is equally untamed—built on scraps, notebooks, and bursts of inspiration. “Sometimes they pour out and fall from the sky,” she says. “Sometimes I have to puzzle them together.” Having played festivals like Mile of Music and MerleFest, and shared stages with Jim Lauderdale, Susan Gibson, and Mary Gauthier, Burton is ready to share Swoonville USA with the world—an album born of heartache, hope, and the wide open road.
