The Atlanta multi-instrumentalist brings allusion & metaphor together with indie song-craft & electronic textures on his new full-length LP.
“Built environment as an unfolding of partial views” is a handwritten note from an exhibition of Georgia O’Keeffe’s New York paintings and sketches at Atlanta’s High Museum in 2024. The refraction & reflection of meaning in various artificial places is a theme throughout Partial Views. Young Weather is the mostly-solo project of Dustin Ragland, a place to put all of the ideas that don’t find root with his live & session work as a drummer & electronic musician. With a long musical history in Oklahoma City, and a growing one in his home of Atlanta, Ragland often finds himself at points of translation & travel between conventional songwriting, and textural expansion of musical form. Partial Views features contributions from OKC’s Justin Rice (Student Film, The D. Whitfield Ensemble) and Asheville’s Tim Fischer. Guitars & voices wind through vocoders & saturation; modular synths become topsoil for interwoven guitar melodies to grow. Partial Views brings philosophical considerations right up to the windows of our fracturing societies: “Distinción de Planos” describes the profane liturgy of recent ICE raids, while “Mapquest (I Tell Myself)” wonders at time lost with loved ones to the demands of capitalism. The personal remains political: “Zosima” considers the emptiness of contemporary feudal lords through both the Psalms and Dostoevsky, and “Nerves” describes contemporary mistrust of one’s neighbors through the past (and present) streets of Belfast. Partial Views finds Ragland seeking understanding from the orderly patterns we try to build into the world, not as opposition nor preventative to nature or emotion, but as reactive points between art and encounter; feeling and phenomena.
