Shannon Provost has meandered between fictional and natural worlds since she was a child: bringing home stacks of books from the local library, wandering through the forest, and writing poems and short stories. After an unexpected and tragic loss, her world plunged into darkness, and she decided to stay there awhile, penning lyrics about paranormal creatures and their surprisingly human struggles, and fitting them to songs written on a borrowed keyboard from her piano-playing father.

The album’s sound came together amid an eclectic mix of musicians in Athens, Georgia with backgrounds in bluegrass (Packway Handle Band), country and folk rock, jam bands, punk, reggae, and even lite jazz…when paid well. Shannon proudly hails diverse musical inspiration from mainstream pop to twangy blues, grungy rock, classic dance hall country, and indie and folk songwriters…and she doesn’t plan on narrowing down her influences any time soon. After a series of garage rehearsals, the band played its first Halloween show in the fall of 2025, to an enthusiastic crowd of local supporters. Meanwhile, Shannon connected with local engineering legend Andy LeMaster (Bright Eyes, Now It’s Overhead, Michael Stipe), who recorded, mixed, and mastered the album during the winter and spring of 2026.

Put simply, MonstroCity is an album that wanted to be made, and Shansylvania is the band that was destined to make it. Call it fate or a silver lining, or reduce it down to sheer luck and serendipity, but the project came together in and out of the real and surreal life experience of debut songwriter and vocalist Shannon Provost and the seasoned musicians she calls friends.
